Description
Matthew Stone, the alienated grandson of a Jewish trigger man for Murder Incorporated, discovers that his father — a dishonored N.Y. judge — has not only been a supporter of the extreme right wing in Israel, but he has kept a secret bank account to support pro-Israeli terrorist activities. And it is how to access the mysterious truths inherent in the bank account that constitutes the core of this fast-driving novel. Through thoughtful characterization, Jon Papernick defines the terrifying distinctions that have to be drawn between faith and zealotry, distinctions that in the end are morally devastating.First Line
Matthew Stone opened his eyes and looked down into the street.
Reviews
"A frighteningly realistic world in which the protagonist faces judgments both internal and external at every turn... As with all good thrillers, Who by Fire, Who by Blood works by keeping you guessing and turning the pages." --Dan Friedman, The Forward
" Who by Fire, Who by Blood will only increase an already widespread feeling that Papernick is one of the few Jewish-American writers able to write about Jewish extremism...part thriller, part love story, part psychological profile...Papernick proves himself a masterful storyteller...” -- Sanford Pinsker, New Jersey Jewish News
"Jon Papernick's Who by Fire, Who by Blood is a psychological thriller with a complex soul. In the tradition of writers like Robert Stone and Ian McEwan, he describes the quest to save oneself by redeeming history, and the perilous consequences that arise from confusing the two tasks. It's a harrowing, distinguished book. -- Steve Stern, author of The Wedding Jester, and The Angel of Forgetfulness.

Wow.
Although a bit confusing at times (this is not a context I am very familiar with) I loved it. A young Jewish man, estranged from his father before he dies, misinterprets his father's wishes, ends up being brain-washed by extremist Jews fighting for Israel in the heart of Brooklyn. The book shows how easy it is to exploit someone who is in sorrow and pain.
Lovely reading by John Greenman, with very accurate expressions mirrored in his voice.
